PSISTORM competes in #DCLAN at MONSTER PC WORLD

article by John Sung

DC LAN in Annandale started early with top members James “MygraiN” Horsey, Jake “NoRegreT” Umpleby, and team coach Erik “EndOfLine” Faden warming up to prepare for the onslaught they would bring on the unsuspecting competition.

With half the player bracket spread out across the dimly lit PC bang the chill atmosphere set the tone for the rest of the day. We were here to have fun, to meet and talk to our friends, and to enjoy a game we all love… even if it meant getting absolutely demolished by some of the best players in the country. It was obvious who was going to be amongst the finals of this Bo3 double elimination bracket for both Legacy of the Void and the Heart of the Swarm tourney. When MygraiN, sitting behind me, casually reached grandmasters with a proxy, I was prepared to type “gg” before my games even started.

But DC LAN isn’t just about winning a tournament. Richard “A9arnn” Ngo came all the way from New York to organize the event. Kerouac drove three hours to pick up Scion (who knocked MygraiN into the losers bracket- LotV) and even contributed $100 to the prize pool. Others who donated were Akasha ($20), A9arnn ($50), and KJ “Freeedom” G.($50). The passion for starcraft is still alive and the experience of meeting new people with that same passion is what keeps the community thriving. Events like DC LANis exactly what starcraft needs.

The remaining slots in the brackets filled up as more players arrived throughout the day. PSISTORM Gaming team owner Freeedom and All-In’s Tyrant Junior, along with Tossim (all high masters) increased the already daunting skill gap between the casuals and the proficient. The final brackets concluded with NoRegreT and EndOfLine facing off in the semifinals of the losers bracket- HotS. NoRegreT would go on to take the tourney beating MygraiN in the finals and the grand finals with a score of 3-0.It was no surprise when NoRegreT would also take the LotV championship facing against Tyrant Junior in the semifinals and, again, MygraiN in the grand finals. Stating he beat David “Lilbow” Moschetto in a match who’s ranked #34 in the world, any local tournament at this point is child’s play for PSISTORM Gaming’s NoRegreT.

RedBull ProAM

Last Saturday, we had several of our team go to RedBull’s Pro Am invitational tournament, featuring Starcraft’s Legacy of The Void Archon mode.

On attendance was Arium, MygraiN, Freeedom, SEF and BlakeHG.

The matchups were one Pro/Celebrity + 3 casuals, and were rotated throughout the day. The casuals who won the most get to go to this Saturday’s main RedBull tournament. So it’s a combination of skill, teamwork, and of course luck. At the end of the day, we had our group for the final match where it was:

After a very close match they edged out our team to take the top spot.

first ever garageLAN for in house tournament

Celebrating the owner Freeedom’s birthday on Saturday, it was decided to have his car enthusiast friends over and have some Starcraft action – all in the same event.

So intense flew in from California to meet with the local-to-DC crew, including pro players EndOfLine and MygraiN.

The tournament finished at around 2am with MygraiN taking 1st and intense 2nd while EndOfLine taking 3rd. See the bracket here.

Here are some pictures of the event from different sources on Facebook.

PSISTORM GAMING In House Tourney & LAN

by Freeedom

Two weeks ago 2 of the GM players we have in the East Coast (DC/MD/VA) decided to get together to watch WCS and maybe play a few games.  Then we thought, why not have an in house tourney as well?  So “in house” had a double meaning for us, like actually at a house, and PSISTORM Gaming members as well. I volunteered my house, and spent the morning cleaning up and preparing, after I got home at noon from a car meet I was organizing.

IMG_1032

Setting up the LAN took a while, my hard password didn’t help, and had some weird issues with the router.

IMG_1025

food preparation wasn’t hard, here you can see salmon being prep’d.

ok all set

MygraiN was the first to arrive and warmed up on ladder

IMG_1035 IMG_1036 IMG_1037

Even though there were only a few of us, getting set up wasn’t easy.  So many technical issues at first. Things you don’t think of happen

. IMG_1041

At least EndOfLine brought his home brew.

IMG_1045

And with that we were set to play

IMG_1046

Brackets set, things seem to be working now.  Internet was a bit slow due to a quick thunderstorm causing interference?

IMG_1043

We had WCS in the big screen (70 inch) while we played

. feardragon_intense

We got lucky as the popular caster feardragon64 agreed to cast it, and some of our players on the West Coast like intense and filthyrake joined in to co-cast. webcam_shots

a few victories, and a long day but we didn’t even finish the tourney, it ran well into 2am! We did start late though.

Things we learned (probably obvious to some of you but we still made these rookie mistakes):

1. start on time, be strict with games starting right away

2. get a game admin and have rules on checking in, reporting results, and communication

3. avoid switching peripherals and settings around, make sure players bring their own gear, and add extra time for setting up

4. do some internet testing before hand, make the net password easy to set up, basically do what you can to do this an hour or so before the matches This was a test run for a possible BASEMENT LAN TOURNEY at my house, not dissimilar to TakeTv’s HomeStoryCup.  But we want to do one for NA.

The tourney is not done, but an update:

DemiLove 2-1 over MygraiN, and now EnDerr vs DemiLove for semis.  We hope to cast the finals later.

here are the VODs from twitch before they get deleted, I suppose I need to get them:
