TRUE’s Journey to be a WCS Champion

TRUE

Bang Tae Soo (방태수) or TRUE as most will know him has finally achieved his dream of becoming a StarCraft Champion. After winning WCS Circuit Summer in Montreal in dominating fashion. TRUE dropped 2 maps across the whole tournament en route to his first ever championship.
TRUE finally received his visa meaning his only chance to make it to Blizzcon for the WCS Global playoffs was to win the remaining WCS Circuit event which gave a direct seed to the WCS finals.
TRUE had already qualified for the hardest tournament in SCII, GSL Code S after defeating CJ Entus Bunny 3-2 in Code A. Upon receiving his visa TRUE dropped out of the tournament to participate in the global circuit.

WCS Summer

Heading into the tournament I thought TRUE had a good shot at winning and completing the Cinderella story, however he was by no means a favourite by the public or experts. The Korean Zerg also had the misfortune of drawing Snute. The Norwegian had just recently taken the top spot has the highest earning SC2 foreigner and was seen as one of the best players in the global circuit.
As it turned out Snute had the misfortune of drawing TRUE as the Korean triumphed 3-0 in a relatively easy and quick series. Eliminating Snute from the tournament. This result caught the attention of spectators and analysts alike. This was a show of strength from TRUE not many saw coming.

Following his defeat of Snute he drew Harstem. The Dutch Protoss player who had recently won Homestory cup early this year, a tournament where TRUE was eliminated in the RO8 by Scarlett. Another hard draw for TRUE with predictions being split by the analysts before the game. TRUE dispatched with Harstem in another easy series 3-0. This result in isolation is impressive but when preceded by his victory against Snute is hard to believe. This started the narrative that maybe TRUE was going to roll straight through the tournament.

TRUE’s next opponent was Welmu who knocked out ROOT’s Hydra, a former WCS champion to reach the RO8. The Fin had already reached expectations by reaching this stage, but with a victory over a Korean Zerg in the round before he showed some promise for this matchup. However, that was cut very short as he was defeated 3-0. Granting TRUE had a 9-0 record on route to the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals TRUE ran into his first Terran, HeRoMaRinE who had powered his way to the finals despite being a heavy underdog, beating Showtime and Major and MarineLorD previously. The German was the first player to take a game away from TRUE before falling 3-1 again winning in convincing fashion with his signature mass queen ling bane style.

Polt awaited TRUE in the finals after beating the North American hope Alex “Neeb” Sunderhaft 3-1. ZvT is TRUE’s worst matchup and Polt is an incredibly skilled player so heading into the final it seemed likely that we would see TRUE finally be tested by his fellow Korean. Polt played well throughout the series and was able to beat TRUE on Dasan Station after losing the opening map, Apotheosis. This series was a strong example of just how incredible TRUE’s multitasking is, with run byes being split from widow mines regularly. As well as constant drops and run byes, while macroing near perfect. After Dasan Station TRUE took the following 3 maps in strong fashion to complete the Cinderella story.

cheeseadelphia

TRUE’s Style

The most powerful part of TRUE’s play is his unique style, massing lings and banelings. Predominantly using Queens as his only anti-air. His use of ling counter attacks reminds viewers of the glory days of Lee “Life” Seung Hyun. TRUE’s often uses banelings with his run byes against terran as well as using overlords to drop banelings. TRUE’s ability to buy time with run byes and counter attacks is a key part of his play and allows him to produce new forces to defend a push. Often forcing players to commit more to the attack than they were planning as the counter attack deals crippling damage. This has potential to be a trap for TRUE, as we saw on Dasan Station, Polt’s only victory in the finals came off a two base all in. As TRUE was trying to counter attack he did not have enough defense to deal with the all in. If TRUE was aware the attack was all in, he could have mounted a stronger defense and not needed to counter attack. TRUE’s goal was to force the push to turn around or have to commit as TRUE deals damage at home, but the Polt’s intentions where to end the game with that push, which he did.

The competition outside of Korea are not fully acclimatised to TRUE’s different play style, and combined with his strong mechanics and multitasking he was able to dominate the foreigners. As time progresses and TRUE attends more tournaments his style will be more familiar to competitors and possibly less successful.

The Next Step

TRUE has secured himself a last minute trip to BlizzCon and should be looking to avoid the Korean Terrans for the best chance at progressing. The likes of TY and Byun would be favoured against TRUE. TRUE’s best shot is hoping for a weaker Protoss such as Patience or Dear as his opponent. Especially Patience, I see patience as a good matchup for TRUE, with his sloppy multitasking being compensated by strong macro. TRUE may be able to overwhelm the Afreeca Protoss with his powerful multitasking and strong style. However, Patience isn’t a shoe in for BlizzCon. Dark and Potentially Solar who will represent the Zergs from Korea would also be a good draw for TRUE, as he has strong ZvZ as we saw against Snute, as well as the matchups notoriously volatile nature.

I think its unlikely TRUE will be challenging to Zest, TY and Dark for the $200,000 1st prize, but he is certainly capable of pushing past the first round and with a kind draw could make a strong run.

Regardless of your feelings about the WCS system this year you should be grateful to have TRUE, an incredibly likable and fun character with the skill to challenge the top for our scene. TRUE streams regularly on www.twitch.tv/truesc2 if you want to learn his style or watch an entertaining high level Zerg you should check it out.

WCS Summer Champion TRUE !

in a dominating performance TRUE wins 2016 WCS Summer Championship in Montreal, Canada.  He beat Snute 3-0, Harstem 3-0, Welmu 3-0, Heromarine 3-1 and Polt 3-1 in the Grand Finals to take 1st place in a prize pool of $150,000 and 3000 WCS points.  He qualifies for Global Finals at Blizzcon with $400,000 on the line.

True wins Cheesadelphia, RuFF gets 3rd/4th!

True and RuFF take 1st and 3rd/4th at Cheesadelphia Summer 2016 LAN in Philadelphia, PA this past weekend.  The largest of the 3 so far, Cheesadelphia had 54 participants, and several NA pros competing.  The top 16 went to the playoffs on day 2.  2 went on to place, with RuFF taking 3rd/4th and True winning the whole tournament.

top4_cheesadelphia3

RuFF was a crowd favorite and had his signature unorthodox style, and was happy with his results. “I didn’t expect to do this well especially after being at risk of not making the top 16.   So I’m happy”, said Jesse “RuFF” Hall.PSICheese3 0019WM

True was happy to win but being competitive he said that his mind was more preoccupied with his loss to Innovation in the Shoutcraft KoTH match earlier that day.

PSICheese3 0003WMIn addition to playing in the LAN, he competed to KoTH online tournament, as well as for WCS Montreal to qualify.

MygraiN (above) and Sugar had success – both got into playoffs / round of 16.  Also with the team is newly added popular streamer, UpATree.

PSICheese3 0006WMOverall a successful showing according to long time captain, EndOfLine

PSICheese3 0001WMAdditionally, PSISTORM Gaming was a sponsor of the tournament, along with having many of its members help, like Temp0 who casted.

PengWin joins as player manager

PSISTORM Gaming has signed Stefan “PengWin” Mott as player manager for it’s Starcraft 2 in both Pro and Academy divisions.  PengWin managed players with mYinsanity for several years, and even played competitively for them as Zerg.

“PengWin has sold us on his strategy of how to improve team practices, chemistry, involvement and ultimately performance for our players. He has learned a lot from his time at mYinsanity and Korean teams and is eager to help push our team to the next level.  He will be staying in the team house and there he’ll be working closely with TRUE and all the other players that spend time there.  He’ll also enact some changes to how we do the day to day activities.”, said KJ “Freeedom“.

Damen adds, “I’m incredibly excited to have PengWin join the organization.  It is my belief and hope that he will help drive our team to the next level.”

While still finishing up business in Switzerland, he’ll be traveling to the United States next month.

PengWin: “I am extremely excited to be joining Psistorm Gaming. After numerous talks with KJ and Damen it’s clear that our goals are very much in line with one another, and PSISTORM Gaming is ready to become one of the leading names in Starcraft 2. I firmly believe in both the management philosophies and the wealth of talent found on the team’s roster, and look forward to bringing what I can to the table in helping us advance farther up the Starcraft 2 professional ladder. I will continue to be active as a player, but of course my primary focus will be on the management side of things, as with mYinsanity previously.”

latest from NoRegreT

by Henry “Stormfront” Bowsher

Today we have an interview with NoRegreT who is a professional Starcraft II player for PSISTORM Gaming. NoRegreT moved out to Korea to practice in the MVP teamhouse. He participated in the GSL and SSL qualifiers, missing out on SSL after defeating Soulkey and Armani Before falling to Trap and Hush. In GSL he beat Dragon and MarineKing. Sadly losing to Stats in two separate BO3s, 4-1 in total.

What were the main reasons for you to go and stay in Korea? Was it just for Stacraft or did you have other motives?

Missed it

Since arriving in Korea what has been your favourite part of your stay?

My favourite part of my stay is the ability to look around me and see new strategies and new inspiration to adapt my playstyle in starcraft.

How do you feel about your qualifier results, getting so close then just not making it must have been hard?

My results weren’t disappointing I had only been in Korea for a short period of time before the qualifiers and played decently well.

What do you miss most while in Korea?

I don’t particularly miss anything besides my friends and family.

Do you practice often with the MVP players? If so what is it like?

Practice is basically everyday at least 1 game per player.

What are the main differences in practice from when you were at home to now in Korea?

The main differences are that I practice more and it’s a lot more efficient.

We have seen some Vlogs from you while in Korea, do you have any more planned soon?

6: I had vlogs planned but i lost my camera so i don’t really have a way to record them.

Roughly how long are you planning on spending in Korea?

Missed it

You have been doing really well in Korea GM, what was your peak rank?

My peak rank was top 16 average around rank 28.

NoRegret has no plans to leave Korea any time soon and streams regularly on www.Twitch.tv/Noregret_ I recommend you check it out for top level zerg play, lots of NA jokes and inside knowledge about MVP and Proleague if you are lucky.

TRUE is coming to the US to compete in WCS

After 9 months of effort, TRUE’s visa to the US has been approved! It’s a P1 (pro athlete) visa for a period starting June 19th. On the June 21st he will be in Germany competing in HomeStory Cup, and on the 27th will be headed to the United States to stay in the team house in Virginia.

Although it had been his dream to compete in the United States he had almost given up, and took some time off from Starcraft. Recently however, he came back with a vengeance competing in GSL, where he made Code A, and then also went on to win his match vs CJ Entus Bunny to make it to the most prestigious league in the world: GSL Code S.

With his visa approval he will be forfeiting his Code S spot, as he can’t physically be there to play his match in Korea. It was a hard choice he had to make, but his ultimate goal in 2016 was to get to the US to play in Blizzard’s World Championship Series.

Starting very late in season 3, he needs to quickly accumulate enough points to make the top 16 for the penultimate event of Starcraft: Blizzcon at Anaheim in November. Getting to the US is the start he’s been waiting on and PSISTORM Gaming is happy for him.

EnDerr qualifies for DreamHack Valencia

Our Zerg from the Philippines won the qualifier between the regions of Oceania (New Zealand/Australia), South East Asia and Japan, and gets travel, accommodation and entrance fully paid to DreamHack Valencia.  Known as “the world’s largest digital festival”, DreamHack features many eSports titles for world competition, with Starcraft II prize pool of $50,000.

When asked about the reaction to him winning by being so aggressive: “I am happy to win, although the opponents didn’t like the playstyle I was doing, i’m glad it turned out in favor fo me”, said EnDerr.

The event is in Valencia, Spain where he will compete against the best of the world.  So far the qualified players from other regions are:

PSISTORM Cup 2 Recap

psistorm cup 2 logo

Overviewcasters

The second PSISTORM Cup took place on Saturday, June 4th at The Cave in Fairfax, VA. During the day, players competed in a Swiss format where the top 8 players were seeded into a single elimination playoff bracket.

Here’s a look at the final results:

  • 1st – PiLiPiLi ($500)
  • 2nd – Creature ($300)
  • 3rd – Pokebunny ($150)
  • 4th – xKawaiian ($50)

The PSISTORM lineupthe boys

In order to defend their team’s honor, the PSISTORM boys came out in full force with a mix of pro, academy, and casual players. Including PiLiPiLi and Draven who flew in from California, the lineup included Freeedom, EndOfLine, PSICup2-24 MygraiN, Sugar, Sef, Kriminal, Drakkhen, Archnog, SirMalagant, and 8 year old Isaac! EndOfLine and MygraiN made it into the single elimination playoffs stage while PiLiPiLi won the whole thing, which was awesome to see.

Missing players

Still missing in action was Jake “NoRegreT” Umpleby. Some say he’ll return to North America and become the foreign hope, others say that PSICup2-29he’ll instead conquer the Korean scene. Only time will tell.

Two other notable players/personalities not at PSISTORM Cup were the champion of the previous event, RUFF, and our premier caster Temp0. Hopefully they’ll be at the next PSISTORM Cup.

Some non-locals

Similarly to the previous LAN, there were players who came from outside of the DC-Maryland-Virginia area. Here’s a shoutout to a couple of them.PSICup2-84

Anny “Allaryce” Dao and Nick “Pokebunny” Taber drove in from New York in order to compete.

Broketail and Angrymuffinman drove in from North Carolina just for the PSISTORM Cup. They even got to cast a couple of games on the couch while they were here.

Swiss formatmotoloco + archnog

Unlike most other tournaments, players participated in a Swiss format tournament where they were matched against each other based on their records. This ensured that players were matched against similarly leveled opponents. After 6 rounds of games, the top 8 players were seeded into the playoffs stage.

“This is basically just a TA vs PSISTORM clan match”

With 4 Team Ascension (TA) players (Creature, Raze, Pokebunny, and Tesla) and 3 kbbq2PSISTORM players (PiLiPiLi, EndOfLine, and MygraiN), the playoffs was basically just a TA vs PSISTORM clan match. Even xKawaiian, the only non-TA/PSISTORM player at the time who also made top 8, now plays for TA as well.

Post-LAN KBBQ

After the finals concluded, everyone headed out to get some all-you-isaaccan-eat KBBQ at Il-Mee. Unfortunately for me and Taylor some of us, we ordered a bit too much food and struggled to finish most of it.

Future StarCraft 3 GSL Champion

Isaac, the 8 year old Terran player, made his very first appearance at a LAN event. Some of his strategies involved floating his main command center to the gold base on Ulrena and constantly chatting during the game in order to distract his opponents. We look forward to seeing this cunning Terran become a literal god in the years to come. Perhaps he’ll be the American hero we truly neeb need.

Interview with DatBoiTesla tesla_psistormcup2_photo_FB

Hi, who are you? Introduce yourself for all your future fans out there in the world.

Hi my name is Robbie aka Tesla from Team Ascension. I am a Protoss player loyally since 2010.

How did you first get into Starcraft and how have you kept up your passion until now?

I first got into Starcraft because my oldest brother Graham started playing the beta with his friends and it seemed like an interesting game. I have never seen anything like Starcraft, and as soon as I started playing, I just fell in love with the game. I kept my passion going by going to tournaments and trying to get better at this amazing game.kbbq1

How did you hear about the PSISTORM Cup and what made you decide to come in the first place?

I heard about the PSISTORM Cup from my team and from Reddit, I decided to come because it didn’t seem to far from me and it was going to be a similar crowd to Cheesadelphia.

What did you like/dislike about the LAN?

I loved the LAN, the swiss format allowed all of the players to win some games, and good players would be rewarded and not be knocked out so fast. The format allowed at the very least, 12 games which is already above average for a competitive tournament.gameplay

I don’t want to be too critical about the tournament because it is so young and is already getting better in every way tournament by tournament, but it would be awesome to get some cooler production, as far as the stations and match ups go, I thought it was close to perfect.

Will we be seeing you again at the third PSISTORM Cup?

You will be seeing me at PSISTORM Cup again, and I plan on winning one someday.

Any last words for your friends and family?

Shoutout to KJ for running a sick LAN, shoutout to all the psi storm guys for being so happywelcoming, and thanks to Travis Yang for helping me get out there and entering me into this sick tournament! I can’t wait for the next one, and I will hopefully see most of you at Cheesadelphia as well!
